BUSINESS Q & A with Karate Sleepover

There are so many entrepreneurs and small businesses to celebrate and get to know in Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, and Allegany Counties. Spend some time with us as we get to know one of them! Did you know that there is a comedy group in Jamestown regularly producing myriad ways to make you laugh? Today, we're going to learn a little about Karate Sleepover.

What gave you the Idea for your business?

In 2017, I started going to open mics at The Q in Jamestown, NY. A community was building very quickly around it and myself and a few other comics decided to plan a show for the Lucille Ball Comedy Festival 2017 that year.

How did your business start?

Some other comics and I wanted to create a group that could bring comedy to the business. We love doing shows so much, so I bought some equipment and started proactively reaching out to perform.

When did your business start?

How many employees are there? We have 2 employees. Paul Clemente & Jeremy Little

What makes your business unique?

We are the only business set up to run a complete comedy show for any environment. Through years of networking and performing we have built a contact list of comics from all over the area with different strengths and styles. We walk you through the whole process helping your event be successful and fun. Karate Sleepover also has a comprehensive budget sheet that suggests ticket prices, considers equipment, accounts for staff - and most importantly – whether the show will make sense from a financial standpoint for you.

What do you want the community to know about your business?

We are available for all kinds of events! We have produced over 85 shows in 44 venues in our short time active. Comedy doesn’t have to be one thing; it can be a bunch of different things and we have the same vision as you do to make it fun for the audience. We have vast experience that keep the event stress-free and fun for your guests.

What about your business makes you proud?

We have produced over 85 shows, 111 open mics, 44 venues, and have booked 137 different comedians. We tailor the comics to your crowd and amplify important voices in the comedy community. Every show we do, we feel we represent Jamestown and all of its value.

How has the SBDC helped your business?

I have been looking to branch out to increase my capability to produce more shows and the courses on the business plans have been very helpful. I was able to easily communicate with my assigned case worker and they were very understanding of my apprehension in dealing with the paperwork.
